The rest of the week is the same with Aiden picking me up every morning and Lucy dropping me off every day at home at the end of our shift from the diner. At lunch, I still sit with Lucy and Devin. Aiden and the guys sit at their usual table behind us, except now Aiden doesn’t sit with Jessica but next to Leo and Mason. The rumor that Aiden and me are a thing traveled through school and comments were made on the picture he tagged me in with the sweater that we are definitely fucking. It’s Thursday, the day before the pep rally for the football game, and the school is full of excitement. The Hillside Ravens will go against Arizona Prep Colts, a public school the next county over, and one of their main rivals.

On my way to work with Lucy, my phone vibrates with an incoming text from Alex.

Alex: Hey, mama, I need to see you today after school. We need to talk about something Linda showed me on social media. What time will you be home?

I know immediately he is referring to the picture and comments about Aiden and me. Shit, I didn’t think about Alex seeing the picture on my Instagram.

Me: Hey. What is it?

Alex: I know I have no right to ask, but who is that in the picture with his arm around you?

Me: A guy from school. Why?

Alex: Name?

Me: What? I’m not going to say his name so you can bother him.”

Alex: Khalani, I’m not kidding. Give me a name?

Me: Fine. Aiden Sincere. Happy now?

Alex: Fuck! Khalani, listen to me. Stay away from him.

Me: Why? Is this some macho crap you’re pulling on me?

Alex: I wish it were, but no. He is not who you think he is. Did you sleep with him?

Khalani: I’m not discussing my private life with you.

Alex: What time do I pick you up?

Me: 5.

If I don’t talk to him, Alex won’t stop and will show up anyway. The last thing I need is Lucy to get wind of Alex. My thoughts go to the El Demonio and if it not for Alex and his connection, Aiden would still terrorize me at school with threats and pranks. The thought doesn’t sit well inside me.

An icy shiver of fear runs down my spine at the memory of that day in the locker room and how sinister they were. What if Aiden hadn’t seen my scars and stopped them? My heart sinks at how easy it was for Aiden to get me to have sex with him and then reject me like I meant nothing.

I’m lost in my thoughts when we pull up to the Ice Cream Shop in Lucy’s Porsche. We clock in and change into our pink-and-white uniform dresses that look like something out of a fifty’s movie.

“So, are you ready to give your speech at the pep rally tomorrow?” Lucy asks with excitement.

I won the contest in Mr. McCoy’s English class and have to read it to the entire school.
